New York City schools are offering to help get pre-K to 12th-grade students from Puerto Rico into the classroom.
Letters were sent home to parents, and principals were informed that officials are working to accommodate children into the classroom as soon as possible.
Still, Department of Education officials say it could be a while before the students arrive, as many families in Puerto Rico are stranded. Once the chaos calms down, they encourage families who decide to come to New York to enroll their children in the city, which has the largest public school system in the United States.
DOE officials add that New York is a good fit because it can offer translation, interpretation and counselors for kids.
Because some documents may have been lost in the storm, officials say parents will not be required to have birth certificates and other documentation.
Anyone with friends or family who have kids who need to come to the city can call 311 for more information. From there, it will be determined where the student will be placed.
