A Brownsville resident battling stage 4 liver cancer is now facing eviction after his mother's passing.
William Sanchez moved into his mother's Brownsville apartment four years ago to care for her. After her passing, Sanchez was diagnosed with stage four liver cancer.
Sanchez says the apartment didn't transfer over to him after his mother passed away and he's been facing eviction ever since.
NYCHA allowed an additional six-month stay, which was then extended by several court orders. However, the stay expired earlier this week and now the eviction is imminent.
Attorneys from the Legal Aid Society are trying to block NYCHA from evicting Sanchez given his health condition.
Sanchez says he just wants to live out the rest of his days in the apartment without the fear of eviction.
In a statement NYCHA said, "Since 2016, NYCHA has cooperated with Mr. Sanchez, his attorney, and the court. Upon learning that Mr. Sanchez was planning to move in with family, the court granted additional time in the hope that this would resolve the issue and be to his benefit. These are unfortunate circumstances and we will respect the wishes of the court and weigh every consideration as we have throughout this process."
