The NYPD has launched a drone soccer team for local youth in Brooklyn, with a league now calling the borough home.
For Ali Nahshal and his teammates, they’ve spent the last few months practicing and are now ready to showcase their talents.
“Drone soccer is kind of like a game that plays like Quidditch from Harry Potter,” said Sgt. Johnny Hines, who’s a part of the NYPD’s Community Affairs division. “There’s two teams, one drone is the striker and that’s the only drone that can score. The other drones are blockers.”
The goal is to combine STEM education with the police department’s community affairs, and Hines says the NYPD is the first department in the United States to have this program.
The NYPD’s next goal is to expand to all five boroughs and eventually have kids compete against teams from around the nation.
