A man was fatally shot by two NYPD officers during a reported burglary investigation, according to police.
The incident took place at 330 Lewis Ave. as officers in the 81st Precinct responded to a call on a burglary in progress at the address. The caller stated that their elderly uncle was inside the apartment saying that someone was trying to break in.
Two officers entered the second-floor hallway of the building and approached the apartment in question. A 78-year-old man inside of the apartment opened the door partially while displaying a firearm in his left hand, police say.
Officers retreated into the hallway of the building, and authorities say the man walked out and pointed the firearm at the two officers. Both officers discharged their guns at the man, striking him in the body multiple times.
The two police officers began to perform CPR on the person shot until additional units arrived. Emergency medical units arrived and removed the man to a hospital, where he later died to his injuries.
Both officers were also transported to a hospital for their injuries. Neither was struck by gunfire in the incident.
Investigative units are currently looking into the burglary call and the incident leading up to the shooting. NYPD Chief of Department Officer Maddrey says the NYPD currently believes that the man who pointed a gun at the two officers was the resident of the apartment that was reported as being broken into.
This is a developing story.
