The NYPD is investigating a string of burglaries in Park Slope as department data shows that the number of burglaries has doubled from this time last year.
NYPD numbers show there were 39 burglaries up until this time in 2016, compared with 61 so far this year in the same area.
Police say a man armed with a knife broke into an apartment on Garfield Place and Seventh Avenue in February. It happened in the middle of the day, and police say he managed to get away with $800 cash and jewelry.
Neighbors say management at nearby buildings have cautioned residents. People along Seventh Avenue say they're doing what they can to stay safe.
The NYPD is offering tips to residents. It urges people to check their doors to make sure there are no issues and to use a deadbolt lock. Police also advise residents to secure their windows, even if they're on the second floor, to set a timer for lights and not to put first names on a mailbox.
An alarm system could also help stymie potential break-ins.
