Detective Cedric Dixon, a 23-year veteran of the NYPD, become the first sworn member of the department to die after being diagnosed with the coronavirus.
Members of the NYPD were out in the pouring rain on Saturday to salute Detective Dixon as his body was transported from NYC Health + Hospitals/North Central Bronx.
The 48-year-old was assigned to the 32nd Precinct Detective Squad in Harlem.
Commissioner Dermot Shea says he spoke to many of Dixon's friends who say he was a person who would do anything to help others and was particularly fond of fixing electronics. The commissioner also said that first responders don't have an opportunity to isolate because they're the ones going to the danger.
"To the men and women of the New York City Police Department – God bless you and thank you for your service. You represent everything that is right in this world. To the families of our workers – thank you for your sacrifice and for your understanding during this unprecedented time."
The commissioner also announced the death of civilian department members Dennis Dickson and police administrative aid Giacomina Barr-Brown.
