An Olympic gymnast is quickly becoming an inspiration to many adopted children.
Thirteen-year-old Elishama Collado was adopted as a baby. She says she dreams of playing in the WNBA and becoming an elite athlete like Olympian Simone Biles, who is also adopted.
"Everybody else has different stories to their life," she say. "The way mine is set up is just great because everybody treats me the same."
A broadcaster recently tweeted out a comment about Biles' family, saying, "They may be mom and dad - but they're not her parents."
Collado says she's familiar with insensitivity toward families with adopted children.
"They would say 'well, you're adopted.' I am adopted but I don't care because I talk for myself," she says. So every time they say that, I always react to it. Because it's just...don't say that. You're not supposed to because you don't know what it is liked to be adopted or not."
According to agencies like New York Foundling, about 10,000 children are in foster care in New York City.
