Opening arguments for both the prosecution and defense were delivered today in the corruption trial against former state Sen. Pedro Espada.
The jury at Brooklyn Federal Court heard the prosecution outline all the "schemes" it says Espada ran to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars from a health clinic in Soundview. The prosecutor told the jury a paper trail will prove embezzlement and tax fraud.
Espada's attorney argued the defendant is only guilty of bad credit and messy financial records, and that he gave $150,000 of his own money to save the clinic.
The trial is expected to last approximately three weeks.
