The Brooklyn Public Library will eliminate Sunday services starting Jan. 4, much to the dismay of many in the Orthodox community.

Sharon Geller, an Orthodox Jewish mother of three, says she can?t head to the library on Saturdays due to religious observances. She says she uses Sundays as an opportunity to spend time with her children. Now, she says she doesn?t know what she will do.

Those in the Orthodox community are calling the library?s decision insensitive.

The library says it is not targeting the Jewish community. Library representatives say the decision was made for budget reasons. They also say the closures will help them avoid layoffs.

Some elected officials suggest the library close on Saturdays instead of Sundays. Assemblyman Dov Hikind says he hopes some kind of agreement can be worked out to accommodate the Jewish community.
