Some parents are calling for the removal of the principal at P.S. 169 in Sunset Park.
Parents claim principal Eujian Juela Kim is not qualified for her position and should be replaced after allegations that she banned anything related to religious holidays, even the pledge of allegiance.
The parents garnered more than 2,400 signatures on a petition calling for her removal.
On a Facebook page appearing to belong to Kim, she claims the allegations about what happened are not true.
The Department of Education says the pledge was not banned, but was only said in the classroom or during major events. They say the pledge will now be announced over the PA system in the future.
The department also says that the ban on holiday celebrations was a miscommunication between the principal and her understanding of school guidelines regarding holiday celebrations.
The Department of Education says that in order to become a principal, one must have seven years of experience. They also say that Kim has that amount of experience and has been working for the Department of Education in some capacity since 2004.
