Parents call on district to give updates on safety, security initiatives
Parents in one Nassau school district are putting pressure on school officials to keep them updated on safety and security initiatives.
A school board meeting Monday evening at Syosset High School focused on school safety in the wake of several school shootings across the U.S.
One mother has started a petition that's been signed by more than 800 parents asking the school to address their concerns about safety procedures and transparency. They'd like to know what the district is doing to prevent violence and whether staffers and students know how to respond in an emergency.
"The more heads that we have coming together to come up with the right solution, the better the chances are that we will have that right solution if, worst-case scenario, something happens here in Syosset," says parent Wendy Levitt.
The petition was presented to the Syosset School Board at Monday night's meeting.
Many parents in attendance say they also want to see upgraded security in order to have more peace of mind for their children.
