Parents in Brooklyn are being urged to kick the habit as part of a smoke-free homes initiative.
Doctors at Coney Island Hospital are calling on parents to sign pledge cards that say they will not smoke around their kids or better yet quit altogether. Doctor Warren Seigel leads the smoke-free initiative at the hospital. He says children are especially vulnerable to second-hand smoke because they are still developing physically. Dr Seigel says they are more at risk for asthma, ear infections and pneumonia.
Brooklyn resident Frederick Daniels has kids and says he smokes outside rather than in front of the kids. Still he is hoping to quit the lifelong habit for the sake of his children's health. Doctors say a few tips to kick the habit include not smoking in the car, not letting your children bring your cigarettes to you and cleaning up ashtrays around the house.
