The parents of a teen boy who was the alleged victim of sexual abuse by a teacher are discussing the case for the first time in an effort to raise awareness, so that other kids don't have to suffer.
The mother of the 14-year-old boy says she discovered her son was being abused by looking at his cellphone. She says she saw disturbing text messages and photos, and was shocked that the person responsible for teaching her son was allegedly taking advantage of him.
The victim's mother and father, visibly upset, stood beside their lawyer and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams on Saturday at Borough Hall. They say they found out about the alleged abuse just last week, but based on the text message history with the teacher, they think the alleged abuse was going on for months.
The teacher, 34-year-old Andre Braddy, was arrested last week. He was a math teacher at Lenox Academy in Canarsie. The Department of Education says Braddy has been removed from the school while an investigation is underway.
The parents say their son is no longer in school and will be transferring. For now, they say he's just trying to process what happened.
The borough president says he'll be working with the Department of Education to make sure teacher-student interaction is more closely monitored.
