Patz case brings attention to other missing children
With the arrest of Etan Patz's alleged killer almost 33 years to the day the 6-year-old went missing, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children is hoping the discovery will remind the public of other unsolved cases of missing children.
The center says there are 16 reported unsolved cases of missing children in Brooklyn, with the oldest dating back to 1977. The most recent case, Patrick Allford, disappeared from his foster home in East New York in January 2010. A director for the center says the arrest of Pedro Hernandez, Patz's alleged killer, should reassure families of other missing children that police continue to work on unsolved cases.
Patz disappeared on May 25, 1979 as he walked to his school bus stop in his SoHo neighborhood. Hernandez has confessed to murdering the boy in the basement of a nearby convenience store where he worked and has been charged with second-degree murder.
In 1983, President Ronald Reagan declared May 25 National Missing Children's Day.
