? The Board of Education?s (BOE) plan to create a new junior high or high school within Montauk Intermediate School has some Borough Park residents upset.
Many parents in the community, which is largely made up of Hasidic Jews, say they fear that bringing outside students to Borough Park would threaten their way of life. However, the BOE claims the space within Montauk Intermediate School is largely underused and all Brooklyn students, regardless of their home address, have the right to attend a smaller school where teachers can give them one-on-one attention.
The city and BOE say they are moving ahead with plans for the new school.
