Parents, teachers and school administrators in Williamsburg are speaking out over a new proposal to house a charter school inside a public middle school. The plan would open a new elementary charter school inside M.S. 50 in South Williamsburg. Charter school officials say they work with children with learning disabilities. Many parents are upset with the idea because the area already has four elementary schools. Some say they'd rather see a focus on quality middle school education. The city's Panel for Educational Policy will vote sometime in March on the proposal. If approved, the charter school would open sometime in August, ahead of the next school year.
