Plans to turn Crown Heights school into apartments concern neighbors

Developers of a new project to convert a vacant Catholic school into a residential building were faced with skeptical residents at a community board meeting Thursday night. 
Community Board 8's Land Use Committee voted to withhold support for the project until certain conditions are met.
The project aims to turn the school next to Saint Gregory's Church, which has been vacant since 2011, into a seven-story apartment building. 
The board voted that the proposal had to be scaled down from seven stories.
The school was originally shut down for structural concerns. 
The diocese says without the project, they won't be able to afford maintaining the church.
Neighbors say the building is better off as a community space. 
The committee will issue their recommendation to withhold support to the full community board next week.
They will also be making their own recommendation to the Landmarks Preservation Commission, which will ultimately approve or deny the project.
