News 12's Most-Viewed: #11 – Police: Man shot, killed on Atlantic Avenue
News 12 Digital is highlighting the most-viewed stories of 2018 as part of our 'News 12's Most-Viewed' series. This tragic story about a man who was fatally shot on Atlantic Avenue was originally posted on Nov. 3. Original story below.
Police say a 27-year-old man was fatally shot on the corner of Atlantic and Grand avenues.
They say a 911 call came in Friday at around 10:30 p.m. that said a man was shot outside the Atlantic Boat Club restaurant on Atlantic Avenue.
When they arrived, they say they found the man, identified by police as Kevin Virgo, with a gunshot wound to the torso.
The man was sent to Brooklyn Hospital by EMS where he was pronounced dead.
People in nearby stores tell News 12 that they heard an argument between a group of people just before the shooting.
Virgo’s friend Derrick Hamilton describes him as a funny, nice guy – a loving father who could make anyone laugh.
Anti-gun advocate Allen James says he plans to speak out on behalf of the Save Our Streets organization in Crown Heights.
“We never let a violent incident like this go by without it being remarked,” he says. “We don't just let it pass as if it were normal.”
James says he plans to attend vigils and rallies protesting gun violence over the next few days to honor Virgo's memory.
Police say they haven’t found any weapons near the scene. They say the suspects were last seen running south on Grand Avenue.
No arrests have been made.
