Federal agents and the NYPD say they've busted a massive underground Medicaid drug ring, netting 48 arrests in The Bronx, Washington Heights and parts of Manhattan. Investigators say Medicaid recipients would sell their free or low-cost pills to middle men on street corners and in bodegas. Those buyers would then in turn sell the pills to pharmacies at much higher prices. The U.S. Attorney's Office says through the scheme, the defendants defrauded Medicaid, pharmaceutical companies, legitimate pharmacies and patients who unwittingly purchased secondhand drugs. The ring netted an estimated $108 million in profits, prosecutors say.
