NYPD officers and police advocates came together to commemorate the life of the late NYPD Officer Anthony Mosomillo with his family on the 25-year anniversary of his burial.
Mosomillo was buried at Greenwood Cemetery on May 30 a quarter-century ago in 1998, days after he was fatally shot when an arrest turned violent.
“He stressed to me that if anything would happen, this is where he’d want to be,” said Margaret Mosomillo, Anthony’s wife. “I joked about it, I took him seriously and today we find ourselves here.”
Margaret and her family were joined by a crowd of NYPD officers and representatives from the New York City Police Benevolent Association to remember the legacy that Anthony Mosomillo left behind.
“That’s what he was as a person, as a human, as a cop… a person that would take the time to stop and help,” said Patrick Lynch, president of the NYCPBA.
Mosomillo was shot and killed when the parolee that he and his partner were going to arrest grabbed his partner’s gun, shooting him four times. He shot back and killed the suspect before dying in the hospital hours later.
"There's a lot of people here today that were there 25 years ago that cried with me and family,” said Sal Mosomillo, Anthony’s brother. “I want to thank them.”
A wreath was laid in front of the mausoleum where Mosomillo was buried as a tribute to never forget him.
