A nearly 50-mile police chase ended with a 30-year-old Holbrook man bleeding on the ground and under arrest early Tuesday morning.
According to court documents, the ordeal began late Monday when two Nassau County detectives went to a home on Patchogue-Holbrook Road in Holbrook. Police say Daniel Heckman got in his car, backed out of the driveway and almost ran over one of the detectives.
The detectives were trying to arrest Heckman for allegedly violating an order of protection and stealing his ex-wife's cellphone from her car while she was in Hicksville.
Court records say police gave chase as Heckman fled westbound on the Long Island Expressway service road at more than 80 mph. At Exit 44, a third officer joined the pursuit, and Heckman allegedly tried to side-swipe the squad car. Heckman continued onto Route 135, then to the Northern State Parkway, and then back onto the LIE before he was stopped back on Patchogue-Holbrook Road, just north of the LIE.
Police say Heckman refused to get out of his car and reached toward the floor, so police used their K-9 "Champ" to assist in the arrest.
Heckman's neighbors say police are often in the area because of him.
Court records show Heckman has been arrested at least nine times in the last decade. He was charged Wednesday with reckless endangerment, unlawful fleeing of a police officer, reckless driving and multiple traffic law violations. He was held on $15,000 bail.
