Police say a prayer service at a Williamsburg synagogue was interrupted when a man barged in brandishing a 12-inch knife Saturday night.
Congregants of the Kerestir Synagogue on Berry Street say adults and children were running for their lives Saturday night after the man interrupted the service. Witnesses say the man was among a group of people throwing soda bottles at some of the congregants as they entered the synagogue moments earlier. According to a witness, some congregants asked the men to stop before one allegedly left, got a knife and returned.
Some congregants believe the incident should be classified as a hate crime.
Police say the suspect is a Hispanic man in his early 20s. The commanding officer of the 90th Precinct reportedly stopped by the synagogue after the incident to interview congregants. Police say no arrests have been made.
