Police search for missing 10-year-old boy
Police are searching for a 10-year-old boy who went missing from a Bushwick school.
They say Wilmin Torres left P.S. 75 on Grove Street at around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The fourth-grader was wearing an orange jacket, blue pants and black boots.
Police from the 83rd Precinct tweeted and printed out copies of a photo of Torres to be distributed. Officials are asking anyone who sees him to call 911.
Torres' disappearance raises school safety concerns that have already been discussed by New York legislators and leaders. In 2013, 14-year-old Avonte Oquendo, who had autism, ran out of his school in Queens and was later found dead.
Shortly thereafter, Avonte's Law was signed, which requires all elementary schools and schools with special-needs programs to evaluate the need for door alarms. Parents that spoke with News 12 Brooklyn were critical of P.S. 75's security system, saying that there are no alarms on the doors, no cameras and not enough security guards.
The Department of Education released a statement on the matter, saying, "The safety of our students is of paramount concern. When this incident occurred, the school immediately contacted the police and the student's family and we are working closely with authorities."
The department went on to explain that school buildings are currently in the process of evaluating security needs to comply with Avonte's Law.
