Police conducting a wellness check at a Crown Heights apartment found a woman's body in the closet Wednesday afternoon.
The criminal complaint says the 67-year-old woman, identified as Paulette Reeves, was found badly burned with stab wounds to her chest and face.
Officers had been called to 1191 Park Place for a wellness check around 3 p.m. because her family had not heard from her and she had not been seen at work.
News 12 is told Paulette Reeves was a cafeteria worker at MS 394 in Crown Heights.
When detectives arrived, court documents say that her son, 32-year-old Jason Reeves, answered the door. He told them he was the only person in the home and that his mother was living there, but was in Florida.
Detectives could smell rotting flesh, which led them to discover her body, according to court documents. They also say the stab wound that killed Paulette Reeves was the one to her chest.
Court papers say investigators believe an accelerant was used on the body. Fire officials also found evidence of charring on the ceiling and the bathtub.
Jason Reeves is charged with second degree murder and concealment of a human corpse in connection to the case. The documents say that Jason Reeves had blood stains on his clothing and was taken into custody at the scene.
A neighbor tells News 12 that he noticed the son's behavior change within the last year.
Jason Reeves is due back in court on Monday.
