Police: Weapons suspect admits to hate vandalism
Police say the man who had a weapons cache in his Remsen Street apartment has confessed to spray painting swastikas at various Brooklyn Heights locations in the month of September.
Ivaylo Ivanov, 37, was arrested on charges of criminal possession of a weapon, unlawful wearing of a body vest and reporting a false incident on Sunday. Officers were led to the alleged weapons cache after he approached them about a gunshot wound to his finger. Police say when they discovered the wound was self-inflicted, they searched his apartment and found the weapons.
Ivanov's building in Brooklyn Heights and surrounding structures were evacuated for several hours while the bomb squad investigated.
Now, Police Chief Raymond Kelly says Ivanov has confessed to spray painting swastikas around Brooklyn Heights in September, including some on Remsen Street. During the rash of anti-Semitic vandalism, Ivanov allegedly targeted synagogues, homes and cars.
