Elected officials and activists are demanding answers after police say a group of men assaulted a woman over the weekend in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
This is the second incident over the last few days. A 15-year-old girl was assaulted in Crown Heights last week.
The latest incident happened Sunday around 4 a.m. outside 291 Patchen Ave. at the Brevoort Houses, according to police.
Police say a 26-year-old woman was walking home when she was attacked by a group of eight or 10 men. They say the men kicked her and stomped on her, stole her sneakers, her bag and her wallet, before running away.
The woman, according to police, had injuries to her back, neck and face.
This is the second incident of a group assault in a Brooklyn community. On Friday, police released surveillance video of a 15-year-old girl being attacked by a group of teenagers on Utica Avenue in Crown Heights.
The release of the video led authorities to several arrests. However, video has not been released in the second incident.
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams says he was told by a New York City Housing Authority employee that there is no one on the weekends who has access to NYCHA’s surveillance cameras.
“The police department didn’t have access to that video over the weekend. Crime doesn’t stop on a weekend, and so the police department should have access to those cameras around the clock,” Adams says.
“We’re saying to the residents here ‘we need you to say something.’ We can’t allow for these individuals to think that they got away with this, because if they do feel that way, they’ll go out there and abuse somebody else, and we want to stop that and nip it in the bud immediately,” says community advocate Tony Herbert.
Police say the 26-year-old victim was first taken to Interfaith Medical Center, but then transferred Brookdale Hospital because of the severity of her injuries.
News 12 Brooklyn reached out to NYCHA, which responded in a statement that read "Please contact NYPD. This is an open investigation."
