The 2020 Democratic presidential candidates have until the end of the month in order to qualify for the next round of debates in September.
News 12 spoke with Patrick Murray, the director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute. Murray commented on two New York candidates currently in the running. He says he does not like New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio's chances.
"He's the one candidate who has decidedly negative ratings among Democratic voters," Murray said. "You can't win a nomination with that kind of negative feeling from your fellow democrats."
Murray said Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has some catchy lines, but the field is too crowded for her to stand out.
"It's just not the right time," Murray said. "So what she needs to do is get this experience under her belt, feel what it's like to run a presidential campaign and decide if she wants to do it again."
The next debate will be held next month. In order to qualify, candidates must have 130,000 unique donors and have at least 2% support in four polls. Neither de Blasio or Gillibrand have either.
The candidates have until Aug. 28 to qualify.
