The West Indian Day Parade is just weeks away and News 12 reporter Joanna Hernandez met with two mas band owners in Brooklyn.
These are businesses that creative the beautiful costumes that people wear as they dance through the streets to the sounds of steel bands or a DJ on the Eastern Parkway.
Daran Andrew, one of the owners and creator of Boommas, says their theme this year is Erotica. "We’re a younger generation bringing a different vibe to the carnival," he says.
Andrew says he wants the people wearing their costumes to feel sexy and empowered to celebrate Caribbean culture.
Alexander Brnabin, owner of Banbochemas, tells us their costumes are all about Haiti’s revolution.
"Every costume has to do with the Haitian revolution. We have a costume that’s called a rebellion soul -- without a rebellion soul, we wouldn’t have started the revolution,” Brnabin says.
The colorful costumes can be pricey, but these owners say it’s worth it. You’re looking anywhere from $200 up to $2,000 for a custom-designed piece.
