Program teaches kids about dangers of gang violence
A new youth-mentoring program in Canarsie is hoping to teach young men and women about the dangers of gang violence while improving community relations with the police.
Michael Thomas, a former corrections officer, kicked off his mentoring program titled "Mr. Mentor I am my Brother's Keeper" today.
The free workshops are for boys and girls ages 7 and up. The workshops teach kids about gang prevention, civil rights and how to act in situations with law enforcement.
Thomas and other former law enforcement members explained to the youths their constitutional rights and showed them the consequences of making bad decisions.
