Public Advocate Jumaane Williams called out the mayor in this year's worst landlord watchlist, saying NYCHA housing has not been managed properly.
The public advocate’s office finds that the buildings owned by most of the landlords on the list are in communities of color-- the same communities that saw bigger impacts of the coronavirus pandemic. Williams also said Mayor Bill de Blasio is to blame for the mismanagement. “Among NYCHA buildings, open work orders have nearly doubled,” said Williams.
A NYCHA resident at the Bronx Murphy Consolidated Housing says a doctor found high levels of lead in her daughter's blood.
“The doctor was so concerned that she wrote a letter to myself and to NYCHA. NYCHA took a whole year to rectify the situation,” the resident tells News 12.
In a statement, the mayor’s office tells News 12 that de Blasio has, ”Invested more to improve conditions at NYCHA than any other mayor in our city’s history.”
