Police from two towns worked with members of the public Friday to find a suspect wanted for a bank robbery in Fairfield.
Police say 29-year-old Nirav Patel, of New Britain, robbed the People's Bank at the Stop & Shop on Kings Highway Cutoff. It happened around 3 p.m.
Patel allegedly passed a note to the teller and left with an undetermined amount of money.
Police say he hit a truck coming out of the plaza and then hopped on I-95 south. State police were able to monitor his progress using state Department of Transportation cameras. Police were waiting to catch Patel when he got off at Exit 17 in Westport.
"He had stopped on I-95 in Westport to check for damage and there happened to be some Westport K-9 units in the area,” says Fairfield Police Chief Chris Lyddy. “It was with the assistance of Westport that he was apprehended."
Police say the people in the bank were shaken up but really helped them catch Patel.
"They were able to give us a real good personal description, and then it was people in the parking lots and on the street that were able to describe the vehicle with significant detail," says Lyddy. "And if it wasn't for their assistance, we might not have had this good outcome."
Patel is being held on a $100,000 bond.
Police say there were no injuries and that they did not find a weapon.
