Red Hook seniors rally for revamped center
Residents rallied outside of a senior center in Red Hook Thursday afternoon, asking for the New York City Housing Authority to finally renovate it.
Seniors say NYCHA promised to renovate the community center on 120 West 9th St. three years ago after it was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. They say although the money has already been allocated, no work has been done.
Lawmakers say they met with NYCHA officials to see why the renovation hasn't been done and they were told that the request for proposals that the NYCHA put out came back above the budget for the project.
"We are in a construction boom right now and essentially contractors are taking advantage of the work that the city's putting out," said Brooklyn Councilman Carlos Menchaca.
While NYCHA decides which contractor will do the renovation, the displaced seniors are forced to use a temporary space next door, and they say they are sick of it.
NYCHA officials told News 12 Brooklyn that they expect to begin renovation work on the new senior center this fall. They say they had to reject bids from contractors because the estimates came back above the $1.8 million that was allocated for the project.
NYCHA says that they are looking at other ways to get the renovations done on a budget.
