Rep. Donovan opposes American Health Care Act
The American Health Care Act put forward by Republicans is on its way to the U.S. Senate, but one GOP congressman representing Brooklyn is not backing the plan.
Rep. Dan Donovan, who represents parts of south Brooklyn and Staten Island, is one of 20 Republicans in Congress who in the beginning of May voted against the GOP-proposed act that would replace parts of the Affordable Care Act.
"The proposal that was offered that I voted against, I thought was more harmful to the people that I represent than helpful to them," Donovan said.
He said that in addition to the proposed plan costing seniors more, there's another major con for his constituents: federal tax credits wouldn't apply to them because the credits cannot be used in states that cover abortions such as New York. Despite Donovan's vote, the House of Representatives approved the legislation, although the win was close -- only 217-213.
Brooklyn residents in the state's 11th Congressional District, like Democrat Janet Grana, say the potential changes are worrisome but that Donovan has approached the situation well, even from across the political aisle.
Others are also pleased with Donovan's decision but say more needs to be done. But Donovan says he still has hope: "There's reason to be concerned but this is not a done deal yet."
Next, the act will head to the Senate for another vote.
