The number of police officers killed in the line of duty is on the rise across the country.
According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial fund, 2011 saw a 13-percent increase in cop deaths compared to the previous year. Gunfire was responsible for most of the casualties.
It is also the first time in 14 years that more law enforcement agents died in shootings than in traffic accidents. In Brooklyn, officer Peter Figoski was killed this month while responding to a home invasion in Cypress Hills.
