Seniors at the Carmine Carro Community Center in Marine Park are leading an effort to install parking spots.

Parks staff is already setting up the spots for parking at the center by putting in a speed bump and stop sign.

Sheepshead Bay resident Carl Fisher started the petition to put in the spots. It has 100 signatures, and the 85-year-old says he easily could have gotten 100 more.

Fisher says the seniors who use the center often use a cane or walker and have to make the long walk from the center to their cars on Fillmore Avenue.

New York City Parks tells News 12 that it listened to the seniors' concerns and will launch this pilot program to utilize an existing concrete pathway for three reserved parking spaces for people with disabilities.

Only 12 parking permits will be issued for the 3 spots with applications available at the center.

The permit is only valid when accompanied by a tag or license for people with disabilities.

In a statement, New York City Parks says, "The goal of the pilot is to assess the actual need for dedicated spaces for those with specialized needs without prematurely re-purposing park land."

The pilot program will run until January 2021, when it will assess the effectiveness.

Fisher hopes by then the city agency will realize how necessary it is. He is planning to push for more spots if possible.
