Residents in Midwood tell News 12 that the pedestrian islands along Kings Highway and East 24 Street are deteriorating and dangerous.
Upon arrival Thursday, the pedestrian islands were strewn with garbage, standing water and broken concrete.
Residents say they worry for the safety of senior citizens who need to cross the street. The area has two bus stops, a school and a doctor’s office.
A spokesperson for the city Department of Transportation says the Kings Highway medians between Bedford Avenue and East 24th Street are getting a facelift. The project is in the design stages and will have wider islands, improved pedestrian safety and be accessible for people with disabilities.
