Ribbon-cutting held at first solar home in Brownsville
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Friday at the first home in Brownsville to have solar panels installed.
Officials say 100 solar panel agreements were made in the area in the past six weeks, which makes Brownsville the strongest early adopter of renewable energy in an urban community in the country.
According to Level Solar officials, owners in Brownsville are going to see an immediate reduction in their energy bills of up to 25 percent.
Assemblywoman Latrice Walkers say the solar panels will produce excess energy that will reduce demand on the Con Edison Brownsville substation and serve East Brooklyn communities and even parts of Queens.
The solar panels are part of the Solarize Brownsville initiative, which aims to help lower energy costs and reduce energy demand while making solar energy accessible to low-income communities.
The initiative is funded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority under Gov. Andrew Cuomo's New York Sun Initiative.
Level Solar officials tell News 12 the panels are installed at no cost to the residents.
