Brooklyn straphangers say they are frequently inconvenienced by faulty elevators and escalators at local subway stops.

According to Metropolitan Transportation Authority records, the escalator at the Jay Street subway stop in Brooklyn has been out for weeks. Residents say riders with disabilities or those who have children with them are physically unable to reach the subway platforms without the use of escalators and elevators.

The MTA says some escalators and elevators have been down for maintenance, but most Brooklyn stations have escalators that are available more than 90 percent of the time. A new transit program was also designed to replace failing parts.

Commuters can check elevator and escalator status on the MTA Web site. A spokesperson for the authority says riders will soon be able to receive status updates via text message.
