The Sagtikos Manor in Bay Shore is the perfect place to celebrate presidents week with the family.
The historic estate was once owned by Judge Isaac Thompson, a prominent member of Islip Town government and a later member of the New York State Assembly.
Following the revolutionary war, George Washington visited the home during his tour of Long Island in 1790 to thank the Thompson family for their patriotism.
“He came to spend the night here, probably had breakfast here,” said Pamela Van Cott, Docent for Sagtikos Manor. “That’s why all through the years, this family is just George crazy. Everything to do with George, they collected.”
The manor is a treasure trove of historic Long Island artifacts, legends and lore.
For example, a British musket ball that was fired at Thompson while he was walking on the second floor can be seen at the location today.
“A British soldier who was in the front was assuming that he was signaling to some of the rebel forces, and they shot at him,” said Van Cott.
