One South Brooklyn Church is celebrating 10 years of giving back to communities all over the city through weekly service.
Saint Dominic’s in Bensonhurst hosted a volunteer-run dinner, where volunteers gathered with the homeless New Yorkers that they serve in an effort to commemorate this milestone.
Many of the volunteers who were present at the dinner have been active since the program’s inception in 2014, and they say that they are still devoted to giving back in any way that they can in their spare time.
“It’s just so rewarding. You feel this kindness in your heart and they’re grateful for anything that you’ll give them,” said volunteer Pina Coccovizzo. “We would make 50 - 70 sandwiches in the beginning, pack them up in the van and go to meet different people that we didn’t know.”
However, the volunteers say the work is far from over, and they are always looking for more volunteers to come and help join their mission.
