As unemployment numbers keep hiking, the need for assistance does too and nonprofits like the Salvation Army continue to open their doors to help anyone in need.
The Salvation Army in Tremont is one of more than 38 locations throughout the city offering hot meals and groceries to go.
Normally the Salvation Army keeps its doors open for people to sit down and enjoy a hot meal or pick up items from a pantry.
“With this social distancing it’s been difficult to travel and help each other out. We had to look interanlly in our communities to find the volunteers and resources we need to keep our centers open,” says Jorge Diaz, community relations manager at Salvation Army.
Diaz tells News 12 they’re working to help anyone who needs it. They’ve created a grab-and-go program right outside their centers, and there’s no requirements.

“Some of our people have been impacted by this virus. We had to reduce some of our hours of operation. In some places, we will do a Monday, Wednesday, Friday and switch it up,” say Diaz.
Diaz says the goal is tokeep centers open for the public, as long as they have the resources to do so.
“We see our food services ramping up. Once the government starts releasing the dollars we would like to help people with rent assistance,” says Diaz.

The Salvation Army is currently looking for donations or people willing to help.
