Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) announced his support today for a new security agreement between cell phone carriers and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The pact gives the FCC permission to disable stolen smart phones using each device's international mobile equipment identity number. Schumer, who backed the plan alongside NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly, says it is intended to not only prevent theft, but sales on the black market. He indicated that cell phone theft is the fastest growing crime in the city. The senator is also working on legislation that would criminalize the modification of a phone's identity number.
