Volunteer law enforcement officials in Brooklyn have set up a free electronic etching program to protect against identity theft. The Flatbush Shomrim helped organize the program with the NYPD. Police officials record each participant's name, address and the serial number on their device. They also engrave a security number, allowing stolen devices to be returned to their rightful owner. Police say residents who keep their electronics out in the open are more vulnerable to crimes. They urge people to avoid walking and texting until they reach their destination.
