Authorities were out in the borough Sunday to distribute free smoke alarms, one day after an East Flatbush fire killed two people.
Lord Kinard, 76, and Octavia Kinard, 71, were killed when a fire tore through their building on Church Avenue early Saturday morning. Three other people were injured.
Authorities say there were no working smoke alarms in the building. The cause of the fire has been preliminarily identified as a power strip.
FDNY and city officials handed out smoke detectors to residents in the neighborhood Sunday, and also gave out electrical tips, such as unplugging power strips wleaving the home.
Borough President Eric Adams is also asking Consumer Affairs to look into nearby shops to ensure that they are not selling power cords or strips that are potential fire hazards.
The demand for smoke alarms was so great on Sunday that the supply actually ran out, but Adams says he will be back to distribute more to the community. Residents can also call 311 for smoke alarm information.
