State police say they're stepping up DUI and seatbelt enforcement on highways throughout Connecticut this Memorial Day weekend.
They say police will have extra patrols on the roads in marked and unmarked cars, checking speeds with lasers and watching for dangerous driving habits. Sobriety checkpoints will also be set up throughout the state.
Officials say the extra enforcement is part of a national program called Combined Action Reduction Effort.
They say drivers should report any suspected drunken drivers on the road by immediately calling 911. Police say a DUI represents a true emergency.
Police say drivers can be safe by buckling up, obeying speeding limits, being courteous to fellow drivers and never to drink and drive.
They're also reminding motorists to expect heavy traffic, to leave extra time to reach their destinations and to take extra care while driving this weekend.
According to AAA, over 36 million Americans will be taking a road trip.
"Sometimes it's a good idea to leave early, If you want to go somewhere, you got to be somewhere, you leave early, that's the bottom line and that's what makes you obey the law," says on driver traveling down to North Carolina this holiday weekend.
Increased police patrol will begin Friday, May 25, until Monday, May 28.
