The state Senate today passed legislation increasing penalties for people convicted of vandalizing religious institutions.
The bill was proposed by state Sen. Jeffery Klein (D-The Bronx).
Under the proposed law, anyone convicted of theft or intentional damage of an item used in worship or in a place of worship can be sentenced to up to seven years in prison.
The bill was introduced after break-ins at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic School in Pelham Bay and Temple Beth El on City Island.
The legislation heads to the state Assembly for consideration before it can be sent to the governor.
