The race for the 22nd District New York State Senate seat came down to the wire on Election Day, although there's still no clear winner.

Democrat Andrew Gounardes declared victory, while incumbent Marty Golden refused to concede. Less than 2 percentage points separated the two.

The Board of Elections and Associated Press had the race as too close to call Wednesday night, even with 100 percent of the precincts reporting. Some absentee ballots still need to be counted.

But that didn't stop Gounardes from declaring victory at his election headquarters Tuesday night. The place erupted into a frenzy with the impression that he successfully unseated Golden, an eight-term incumbent. Over at Golden's headquarters, there was an otherwise dispirited crowd that remained hopeful when Golden refused to concede the race.

It can take up to a week for all of the remaining ballots to be counted.
