East Flatbush street voted Greenest Block in Brooklyn
An East Flatbush block has won the title of the greenest in the borough for its lush plants and flowers.
The top honor for the 22nd annual Greenest Block in Brooklyn competition went to East 25th Street, between Clarendon Road and Avenue D, whose residents make up the 300 East 25th Street Block Association. They have also won three times in the past.
Competition was stiff this year and included 150 applicants.
The winners say they go for textures and foliage and mix both perennial and annual plants when decorating street tree beds, window boxes, front yards, stoops and door ledges. Some of their plants were imported from Belize.
The winning block cannot compete next year, but residents say they are mentoring neighboring blocks.
