Brooklyn garden shut down in June reopens under new leadership
The Green Gems Garden reopened in East New York on Wednesday after being shut down by the city in the beginning of June.
James McCrae, known in the neighborhood as "Mr. James," started the community garden 23 years ago.
His license was pulled this summer by the Parks Department over multiple violations for marijuana plants growing there, which Mr. James denied.
Green Gems Garden will now be under the leadership of Community Board member Vincent Riggins, who says McCrae will continue to play a vital role in the garden he started.
The Parks Department said in a statement, "The garden has been licensed to new garden leadership. We are excited that this space has been returned to community use."
