Residents say they are upset that two pedestrian islands were recently removed in the middle of Eastern Parkway.

The Department of Transportation removed islands at Brooklyn and Kingston avenues in preparation of the West Indian American Day parade.

"The original pedestrian malls were put in for safety and then when the recognition of what it would mean to move the floats around them became clear, we realized there was an unintended consequence," says Mayor Bill de Blasio.

The department says the islands were installed this past December in response to several crashes that injured pedestrians.

Residents are calling the removal of the islands specifically for the parade unfair. They also voiced concerns about the money spent on the installation and removal of the islands.

The DOT wouldn't say how much money it will cost, but did say it was hoping to reuse the materials and is looking for potential replacement ideas for the future.
